An interactive installation consisting of a video camera, a projector, and a bass speaker. The individual components are connected to create a feedback loop. The camera sees what the projector displays, and the projector displays what the camera sees. The bass speaker outputs what the camera microphones hear, and the microphones in turn pick up the speaker’s output.
These action-and-reaction connections are not self-contained; they also leave room for external elements, such as viewers, to actively influence the system. By intervening between the camera and the projector, viewers provide the system with new impulses for generating images.
“Self-Referential System” raises questions about how we position ourselves in relation to and within systems. At what point do viewers become part of the system? Does this happen as soon as they enter the exhibition space?
It also raises questions about a universal language shared by electronic devices and the algorithmic creation of visual and sonic worlds.
